Discover the world of dog leads - shapes, colours and functions

Dog leads come in almost all shapes and colours: from round to smooth, short to long to colourful or plain. They are available with reflective elements , padded hand loops and made of non-slip materials . The decision for a type of lead is yours alone and depends on the situation in which it will be used. Therefore, a dog needs several leads in her life: e.g. for the time as a puppy, for dog training and for the adult dog's everyday life. A lead provides a link between you and your pet and ensures safety and control - it is an important tool for dog training.

Learn more about the different types of leads and their special features. When you have decided on a model that suits you, you can narrow down your search using the filter "Lead type".

What types of leads are there?

Short lead

The metre lead supports you and your dog: it limits the freedom of movement and ensures that your dog walks right at your side. This leash can be very useful, especially in heavily frequented areas such as city centres or pedestrian zones.

Adjustable lead

The all-rounder among dog leads. An extension lead is flexible to use because it can be adjusted to three different lengths. The dog lead is equipped with several rings to which a carabiner or trigger snap hook can be attached: This is located at the top end of the lead and is hooked either to the ring near the collar, in the middle or at the end of the lead. For more flexibility, the position of the rings can often be adjusted.

flexi retractable lead

A flexi retractable lead allows a little more freedom of movement: The flexi leads have a robust handle made of plastic and are equipped with either a thin rope or a narrow webbing tape. With the flexible lead, dogs can go exploring while on the lead. The lead automatically lengthens when your dog moves away from you and retracts when she returns. With the lockable stop button, you can fix a certain length at any time.

Retriever lead

A combination of collar and extension leash: The retriever lead was originally developed for retrievers – as the name suggests – and was mainly used for hunting. The animals often have to go through bushes and deep undergrowth when retrieving. To ensure that no sticks or branches get caught in the collar during the search and injure the dog, the animals are often sent on the search without a collar. Since the collar of the retriever lead only needs to be slipped off, the animals are quickly ready for their task.

However, the popularity of this type of lead does not only extend to owners who are hunting enthusiasts. The retriever lead – also called a slip lead or moxon lead – also enjoys great popularity in everyday life and especially in dog sports: it makes it possible to attach and detach the dog lead quickly and easily. This feature is helpful when flexibility and freedom of movement are required and your pet is already well trained and walks well on a lead.

Tracking lead

A tracking lead offers your four-legged friend a lot of freedom of movement. This type of lead is often used for training young dogs and puppies to practise controlled running free. A tracking lead is a particularly useful aid for training call back, off-leash running or retrieving over short distances. On the camping site, it helps to keep your dog close by - but gives him the opportunity to run around or find a shady spot at any time. A tracking lead is also convenient for bitches in heat: the owner can keep the animal close by at all times and keep an eye out for potentially attracted males. For lively and uncontrolled dogs, a shock absorber should also be added.
